Diet for Fatty Liver | Guidelines You Need To Know

Having diagnosed of “fatty liver disease” can be daunting to many people.

Fatty liver disease is the build up of excess fat in liver cells. Though it may be harmless, fatty liver disease can also result to serious health conditions such cirrhosis or liver failure if ignored.

Good news is that fatty liver IS treatable. You can repair liver damage and reverse the problem by adopting a healthier diet.

The diet for fatty liver disease focuses on helping patients to lose weight, reduce triglyceride levels and decrease liver inflammation.

Here are some steps you can take to start changing your diet for fatty liver:

  • Increase your intake of raw fruits and vegetables. Eating fresh fruits and vegetable will decrease the amount of saturated fat in your diet and ultimately reduce the fat deposited to your liver.
  • Keep your eating habits in moderation. We all know that overeating may result in overweight and obesity. These conditions increases your risk of liver failure. To avoid this, learn to eat in moderation. Instead of eating three big meals in a day, try to spread your meals to 5-6 small meals in a day.

You could easily do this by eating small meals and snacks within 2 to 3 hours in between meals.

A good example schedule would be: to eat within an hour after you woke up, a snack 2-3 hours after breakfast, lunch 2-3 hours after snack, snack about 3 hours after lunch, dinner meal 2-3 after your snack, and you may grab a quick snack 2-3 hours after your dinner.

But make sure that your last meal is 2-3 hours before you go to sleep. This will promote easy digestion while your body heals during sleep.

  • Low Fat please! Your liver normally breaks down fat in your body. However, having excess fat in your body can hinder the function of your liver and slows it down, therefore adding the excess fat in the liver.

So people on a diet for fatty liver should watch out for foods containing high amount fat especially fast foods, fried foods, and red meat.

Instead, try to go for food with lower fat percentage or fat-free. These include skim milk, lean meats, turkey, and fat-free salad dressings.

If the food has trans fat, skip it altogether. Trans fats raise triglyceride levels, which can worsen fatty liver disease.

Snack on fresh fruits and vegetables and drink a lot of water for good hydration.

  • Learn about Triglycerides and how to reduce it. Triglycerides are a chemical from of fats. Diet for fatty liver should focus on reducing triglycerides through reducing fat and calorie intake.

Excess triglyceride in the body are turned into fat in the liver cells. So people with fatty liver should try to reduce fatty foods and carbohydrate intake since carbohydrate are often turned into triglyceride after they are consumed.

  • Avoid alcohol. In moderation, drinking alcohol is fine. However, abusing alcohol often leads to serious health conditions including fatty liver disease. If left untreated, alcohol abuse will damage your liver a great deal and decrease its function.

Changing your diet for fatty liver can be easily achieved by following the simple steps above. Decisions about your food intake should be reported to your dietician or physician so you are guided with the proper diet modifications that is right for you.

    I do believe that staying away from prepared foods could be the step one to be able to reduce weight. They will taste great, but refined foods currently have minimal vitamins and minerals, making you feed on more in order to have enough strength to get over the day. In case you are constantly ingesting these types of foods, changing to grain and other complex carbohydrates will make you to have more energy while taking in less. Good post.
